Treats the root cause of problems rather than the symptoms
Nicki’s knowledge of the muscular make up of the human body is incredible – she treats the root cause of the problems rather than the symptoms, which has meant that I have not missed a single day of cricket for the last 3 years. (Updated 28/7/16) …and ten years later, Continue Reading
IC Sports Therapies are pleased to announce another first! We have an innovative new HUMAC balance assessment and treatment tool, and it is available to all our clients. This system is the first such unit in a private practice* on Sydney’s North Shore, whereas these units are usually found only in University settings.
Balance Assessment
The new Balance System represents a breakthrough in computerised Balance Measurement and Training Systems. By coupling the Balance Software with the most popular balance board in the gaming industry, we are able to offer cutting-edge diagnostics and treatments for Athletes, Trainers, Physical Therapists, Exercise Scientists, Physiotherapists, Podiatrists, Doctors, etc.
The Balance plate looks like a typical gaming board, but this one provides clinical grade accuracy. The Balance System is a static force plate combined with a Tilt system, allowing both static force and dynamic tilt measurements. These parameters are used in a variety of protocols to access and improve the capabilities of balance, orthopaedic and neurologic patients. In many cases the same display is used for all three types of patients, for both testing and exercise, on both stable and unstable surfaces. In addition, real-time biofeedback helps users better perform the exercises they are already doing, while making the exercises more engaging.
HUMAC Measurement and Training Routines
The HUMAC Balance System includes, amongst others, the following Measurement and Training Routines:
Clinical Test of Sensory Input Balance (CTSIB). This tests how a patient’s vision, vestibular and somatosensory systems interact, and if a deficit exists compared to a normal population. The patient is tested on both firm and unstable surfaces, with eyes open and closed.
Centre of Pressure – tracks a Patients’ COP while performing exercises with eyes open or closed. This shows variations in a patient’s Left/Right, Front/Back weight distribution while being tested.
Weight Shift – measures a patient’s ability to shift their weight back and forth, while hitting targets and keeping within a target zone.
Limits of Stability – this testing mode has targets for a patient to move a cursor to, and then hold on target for a selectable time, before moving to the next target.
Roadway – reports a patient’s ability to accurately weight shift, while keeping within the boundaries of a “roadway”.
Weight Bearing – displays how weight is distributed right to left or front to back.
Tests can be performed anonymously, but individualised patient profiles can also be set up on the computer to track progress and results. This means we can test a patient, treat them, reassess them a few weeks later, and provide before-and-after comparison reports.
The Balance System retains all of the raw data collected from a test. Results can be reported using a standard Test, Progress, or Group Summary format, for reference by the patient themselves, or a referring doctor, physiotherapist or sports trainer.
Fun
The Balance System includes Down Hill Skier, Flight, Tilt Board, Breakout, and Pong games so Physical Therapy is always fun and exciting.

As Inaugural President of a new brand of cricket for kids with disability, Nicki developed health and first aid policy, and liaised with Cricket NSW.
Blind Cricket
As an accredited Cricket Australia Coach, Nicki has worked with the Aussie Blind Cricket Team and both the NSW and ACT Blind Cricket Teams. She has also worked as Team Therapist and Trainer.
In 2008 she was on the organising committee which hosted the Inaugural Australian Blind Cricket Ashes, and acted as Team Therapist for Australia. She also acted as Tournament Therapist for the 2010 Nationals in Sydney.
Patron of the Inaugural Australian Blind Cricket Ashes 2008 Tour, Richie Benaud, meets Nicki Cooke
Wheelchair Sport
Since 1998 Nicki has provided remedial massage, sports injury therapy and first response to athletes with disability. With experience at Olympic, Paralympic and World Cup level, Nicki has also travelled to Paris for the French Open (Wheelchair) Tennis, and worked with the WheelBlacks and Australian Steelers at International level.
Rehabilitation
The last 20% of recovery from injury, accident or illness takes 80% of the time and effort. It is challenging for therapists and frustrating for clients. Often a cheerful word and a fun approach to rehab helps to change mindsets and break down psychological barriers to progress. Research in neuroplasticity cause and effect has resulted in significant improvements for clients.
Masters Sport
Working with Masters Athletes requires a lateral approach, and Nicki feels that athletes at elite level in Masters sport have the most to gain from her experience. Usually therapists aspire to work with young elite athletes so Masters is an area with a paucity of therapy options. Thus she has found a willing and motivated group.

Indoor Cricket
Both N.Z. and Australia have benefited from Nicki’s care. In South Africa in 2011, for Opens, and Masters Gold Coast for Australia, the teams under her watchful eye made a clean sweep of all 5 grades.
The N.Z. teams at Masters level took bronze, silver and gold in South Africa in 2013, and their Over 40 Men’s Team took Silver in the 2015 Australian Masters Championships.
Nicki Cooke went to Adelaide for the 2019 Australian Indoor Cricket Masters Championships, as Team Therapist for the New Zealand Central and Northern masters sides.
I have been seeing Nicki for the last few weeks for back and leg pain. Never in my life have I ever felt so comfortable with a therapist before. I enjoy coming back every week and can not recommend her enough! See a video testimonial by Courtney.
Had a massage from Nicki after many (too many…) years of not seeing her and it was A.M.A.Z.I.N.G! So glad I get to be the first to comment on this great business’ Facebook page. Professional, but relaxed, atmosphere to the place – definitely a place of caring and healing…
I felt like I had a massage and a therapy session all one
