Osgood-Schlatter’s Disease, a villain of teen sport.

Rapidly growing bones, combined with great love of high impact, reaching sports such as AFL, basketball and netball, can often lead to inflammation of the tibial attachment of the patella tendon, known as Osgood-Schlatter’s Disease. Ongoing repetitive stress on the tendon can result in micro tears to the tendon and damage to the bone itself.

Tibial tendon attachment point affected by Osgood-Schlatters

Left unchecked and untreated, it leads to a bony protuberance on the tibia, disintegration of the bone causing intense pain for the athlete.

Symptoms

Symptoms include:

  • Localised pain at the attachment point on the bone during and after sport
  • Oedema (swelling) and tenderness below the knee both in the tendon and in the capsule that contains the patella.
  • Pain that can be triggered by contacting the quadriceps against resistance.
  • Pain made worse by the application of ice.

Generally, athletes between 10 and 18 years are most likely to develop the condition, and it is usually more common in boys.

A visible increase in size of the tibial attachment in either one or both legs.

Treatment.

There are a range of options which are beneficial depending on the severity of symptoms.

Active rest and heat, the use of topical pain relief creams, and a heat retainer in initial stages are helpful. Cessation of the activity provoking pain until symptoms subside and the use of Kinesiotape to support the knee and reduce pressure on tissue can also be helpful.

Shockwave and low level laser are also effective in reducing injury time, as is manual lymphatic drainage in reducing the impact of the condition.

Osgood-Schlatters disease rarely requires medical intervention, and frequently heals once the athlete reaches physical maturity. Problems in adulthood occur most commonly from loose bodies in the bursae that surround the knee.

However, an athlete who has Osgood-Schlatters Disease, may have several bouts of the condition prior to muscular-skeletal maturation.

Funds to Save the Rhino

Rhinoceros

Before Nicki’s recent Big Bash anniversary evening, Ally Hewitt (from the Boucher Legacy) wanted to place the following on record, and also to put in writing their sentiments for what she has done:

“The Boucher Legacy in South Africa is focussed on conservation and protection of Rhino and other endangered Mammals that are facing extinction through human atrocities mainly poaching. Our organization was the beneficiary of the Over 50’s World Cup Team that visited Australia last year and my understanding is that this was where you heard of our organization and offered your kind assistance.

The Boucher Legacy Logo

We are most appreciative of your generosity and kind gesture to help us to raise funds from your own practice in Sydney Australia. I understand your evening’s function is to meet with your patients and friends and to highlight the funds that you have raised for The Boucher Legacy in South Africa. Thank You for your leadership and proactiveness in making this happen and also for profiling the Legacy we are working on tirelessly to combat the atrocities of Rhino Poaching and to save these beautiful animals as part of our natural heritage.

We are truly grateful and really wanted to say THANK YOU & ALL YOUR SUPPORTERS for this amazing contribution!

Thank You So Much from all of us at the Boucher Legacy!

Best wishes

Mark, Ally, Donne, Roger, Nicky, Katie & Leigh”

Donations are still being accepted by IC Sports Therapies as the fundraising continues.

Cutting the anniversary cake
L to R: Councillor Nathan Tilbury, with Lisa Barnes, Hugo de Amorim, Steve Cooke, and Nicki Cooke, all of IC Sports Therapies, cutting Nicki’s 25th Anniversary cake.

Nicki Cooke, principal therapist at IC Sports Therapies in Hornsby, celebrated her 25th anniversary as a therapist in the Hornsby area with cake, and by donating $4515 to help Save the Rhinos.

Nicki first established her practice 25 years ago, working from her home clinic in Hornsby Heights. Since then, she has worked with athletes in many sports, from the 2000 Sydney Olympics, to Wheelchair Tennis and Blind Cricket, and to Masters Indoor and Outdoor Cricket. 5 years ago, she moved her home clinic into Hornsby and established her current practice, IC Sports Therapies.

Through treating the South African team at the Over 50s World Cup Cricket last year, she was introduced to the Mark Boucher Rhino Legacy.

Headed up by ex-South African cricketer Mark Boucher, The Boucher Legacy was started in 2012 when Mark retired from international cricket and began to focus his passion and commitment on wildlife conservation. The Legacy aims to protect rhinos by prosecution of poachers, by conservation work including tracking rhino, and educating people about the false claims that are made about the properties of rhino horn. The Boucher Legacy has recently begun to broaden the scope of protecting to endangered mammals as the war on poaching moves across a variety of species.

Nicki announced the donation before a crowd of well-wishers during a live video hookup with Ally Hewitt of the Legacy fund. The amount was raised by pledging $5 each from the more than 900 treatments she had performed so far this year.

Further donations from the general public to Help Save the Rhinos would also be welcomed.
