Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a type of gentle massage which is intended to encourage the natural drainage of the lymph from the tissues of the body. The lymph system depends on intrinsic contractions of the smooth muscle cells in the walls of lymph vessels (peristalsis) and the movement of skeletal muscles to propel lymph through the vessels to lymph nodes and then beyond the lymph node to the lymph ducts which return lymph to the cardiovascular system.

MLD uses a specific amount of pressure (less than 9 ounces per square inch) and rhythmic movements to stimulate lymph flow and is now recognised as a primary tool in lymphoedema management.

MLD not only stimulates the vital functions of the skin, tissues and internal organs, but also serves to eliminate cellular waste and stimulate the parasympathetic relaxation response inhibiting muscle tonus and pain. Research has also shown that MLD stimulates the immune system to produce more immunity, a valuable contribution to winter health! It also provides an excellent tool for massage therapists when regular massage is contraindicated.

Bookings for Lymphatic Drainage sessions with Nicki may be made online.

IC Sports Therapies says welcome Ann Swinney.

Ann Swinney

Join with us to welcome Ann Swinney, who has a long held passion for helping people. This has been evident in her corporate career in human resources and now with massage therapy.  She thrives on identifying problem areas and helping people in their recovering and feeling better.

She has completed her Certificate IV in Massage Therapy and has one subject left to complete her Diploma in Sports Therapies.  She will also complete her Diploma in Remedial Massage this year.

In her spare time, Ann loves spending time with her family and seeing her son grow and thrive.  She is also maintaining her fitness through participating in triathlons and fun runs and trying to make sure her son doesn’t beat her. She is quietly pleased he can now run and swim faster than her and hopes he has a passion for looking after his health for life.

IC Sports Therapies are happy to extend a warm welcome to Ann as she joins our Team, and look forward to a long and happy association with her.

Ann is no longer with IC Sports Therapies, and we wish her well in her future.

Lisa Barnes, Remedial and Swedish Massage

Lisa

I am a mother of two teenage children. I understand the constant struggle to have balance in our lives. Being there for your family, providing for your family, trying to stay fit and healthy. When the stresses in life start to impact our physical and mental wellbeing we start to feel overwhelmed and our body reacts.

I can help you regain balance in your life. Whether you are sitting at a desk all day, training for a sporting team, recovering from injury, renovating the house and garden, raising young children, there comes a time when our body needs attention.

I am passionate about providing the best treatment outcomes possible and working towards clients’ long term health goals. I am part of a multidisciplinary clinic where we work collaboratively to get the best results for our clients.

I use a number of postural and functional movement tests to establish a starting point, which can also be used at the end of treatments to see how well the body has responded. These help guide me to choose the best possible treatment plan and follow up treatments.

So whether you want to relax, unwind & relieve tension, reduce pain, rebalance or improve mobility I will be able to use a combination of soft tissue massage, stretching, strength exercises and taping to reach your goals.

Benefits of massage:

  • Reduced pain
  • Improved functional movement (mobility around joints)
  • Move more freely
  • Improved overall well being
  • Help reduce the risk of injury
  • Alleviates soreness
  • Reduce recovery time
  • Enhance circulation
  • Decrease blood pressure

Welcome to Brigitte Batten, Chiropractor

Brigitte

IC Sports Therapies welcomes Brigitte Batten to the team*.

Brigitte Batten is a Macquarie University graduate with a passion for sports (especially gymnasts and dancers) due to her elite gymnastics background along with coaching/judging experience in gymnastics. She chose to study chiropractic due to an accident causing her to stop gymnastics and now her goal is to help people be able to overcome their injuries so they can continue doing the sport or activities they love.

Brigitte is dedicated, organised and very eager to help people with a range of different injuries, ranging from necks, backs, shoulders, ankles, headaches etc along with looking at the body as a whole to make sure you are working structurally, functionally and to allow maximal body’s performance. She also wants to encourage preventative strategies, such as rehabilitation and taping. Brigitte is very interested in expanding her knowledge with paediatrics, dry needling and other evidence based techniques to take a gentle approach to chiropractic and allow people to have the most effective treatment.

Brigitte has been an elite gymnast for 8 years before the injury, with her favourite apparatus, the beam. She is still very involved with gymnastics as she is an Advanced Gymnastics Coach and an Intermediate Gymnastics Judge with a club in Hornsby, coaching with a range of levels from kindygym, dance, school classes to high level gymnasts.

* Brigitte ceased practice at IC Sports Therapies in January 2019.

Changing our hours

We would like to advise that IC Sports Therapies are changing our opening hours for the two-week period Monday 16 October to Friday 27 October 2017.

The changed hours are in response to our reduced staffing levels, with our Principal Therapist  Nicki Cooke away, serving as a Team Therapist at the Indoor Cricket Masters Trans-Tasman tournament in Mount Maunganui, New Zealand.

The continuing needs of our clients are being met by Jason, Colin and Lisa, our Physiotherapy, P.T. & Pilates, and Swedish Massage therapists.

For both weeks of 16-27 October, our clinic hours will be 8:00am – 5:00pm. Our phones will be answered by Steve, who will answer your enquiries and take your bookings.

For these weeks, our therapists are available by appointment as follows:

• Jason: Mon 8am-12 noon, Tue 9am-6pm, Wed 8am-12 noon, Thu 9am-6pm, and Fri 8am-12 noon.

• Colin: Mon 11am-3pm, Tue 8:30am-1pm, and Thursday 8am-3pm.

• Lisa: Wed 9am – 4pm, and Friday 9am-6:30pm.

From 30 October we will again have our full complement of staff, and will resume our normal opening hours of 7:00am to 6:00pm, Monday to Friday.

Please note that Nicki already has limited bookings available for the weeks before 14 October, so we advise you to get in and book a time with Nicki ASAP.

On-line Bookings for the next 120 days can be made any time, at http://icsportstherapies.com.au/bookings/.
